Prada’s Fall 2014 Runway Bags Have Arrived in Stores

Prada Lux Calf Medium Flap Satchel Bag Yellow

In spite of the fact that I’m generally willing to give Miuccia Prada the benefit of the doubt on almost anything (those ill-advised, open-toe Miu Miu cowboy boots from a couple of seasons ago are a notable exception), I wasn’t really feeling most of Prada’s Fall 2014 runway bags. Most of them were decked with huge, ungainly chains and little else, and many of you were similarly unsure whether they’d translate well to retail. Good news: they have!

Pre-orders for Prada’s fall runway bags are now up at Bergdorf Goodman (as well as for a whole load of non-runway options), and the results are mostly quite good. There are far fewer chains, and the bags that have had them eliminated entirely fare the best, especially the elegant top handles. If you still want a chain in your life, there are some smaller, mostly metallic options that meet your needs, but they’re not the highlight here. Check out a selection of the bags below and shop the full selection via Bergdorf Goodman.

Anndra Neen to Auction Off Solid Gold Clutch Commissioned by Carine Roitfeld

Anndra Neen Solid Gold Clutch

At times, it feels like the handbag and jewelry markets are slowly converging into one. Customers who like one type of high-dollar designer accessory are likely to be interested in others, and costume jewelry designers like DannijoMawi and Shourouk have taken that opportunity to expand their reach into the handbag market with lines of metal-and-rhinestone-accented clutches and bags that combine the best decorative aspects of their jewels, with generally well-received results.

The jewelry-designing sisters behind Anndra Neen dipped its toes in the clutch waters not long ago, and the results were more than well-received; the little cage clutch that was the crowning achievement of the small bag line sold out so quickly when it became available at retailers that I felt like I was chasing it around the Internet in order to write a post about itAs Style.com reportsCR Fashion Book editor Carine Roitfeld was so smitten with the clutch that she had the designers make it in 18-karat gold for the LoveGold amfAR gala at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

The clutch stayed with the sisters after the gala, and now they’ve turned it over to Sotheby’s for auction during the house’s Important Jewels auction on September 23 in New York. Right now, the estimated final price of the clutch, which required 20 hours of painstaking hand work, is in excess of $20,000. That’s less than plenty of Birkins, which is not bad when you consider that it’s a one-of-a-kind, handmade piece rendered in solid gold at a fashion legend’s request.

Man Bag Monday: Carven Leather Backpack

Carven Leather Backpacks

In general, men’s bags cost less than women’s do, even when the men’s version is based on a popular women’s design (and is larger than that design). The only place where that seems to be particularly untrue is when it comes to backpacks; perhaps designers assume that a man buying a luxury backpack is likely to be more accustomed to to exorbitant fashion pricing than one just trying to pick up a nice briefcase.

Even non-leather backpacks can reach four figures pretty quickly, and I’m not much of a fan of that no matter the gender of the bag’s intended audience. If you’re a dude who wants a designer backpack from a buzzy brand under a thousand dollars, check out the Carven Leather Backpack.

This design is a totally pared-down take on the Jansports we all carried in middle school, except now that we’re adults, the bag is rendered in leather that appears to be super buttery.

The Many Bags of Rachel Zoe

The Many Bags of Rachel Zoe

Although Bravo has done its best to put to rest rumors that The Rachel Zoe Project won’t be coming back for another season, we thought that now, the morning after Zoe’s Season Five finale, would be an appropriate time to take a look at The Many Bags of Rachel Zoe. As you all know, Zoe was a stylist long before she was a TV personality or owner of a fashion line, so she’s got one of the most well-stocked closets in the business.

If you’ve watched as much of The Rachel Zoe Project as I have, then you know what to exact going forward: a lot of black, a lot of Chanel and Hermes, and a lot of stuff that’ll make you want to go shopping immediately. Lately Rachel carries some of the handbags from her own line, of course, but she does keep it real with other designers’ bags as well. If there’s one thing I’ve learned for Zoe’s show, it’s that a girl always needs options.

The Many Bags of Khloe Kardashian

The Many Bags of Khloe Kardashian

There are few more controversial figures in American pop culture than the Kardashians, and they’re controversial in exactly the ways that make for excellent bag-spotting. Extravagant, conspicuous, exhibitionistic – the Kardashians have a lot of stuff, and they’d like to show it to you. That makes Khloe Kardashian a perfect candidate for our weekly handbag examination. Sister Kim had the biggest collection we’ve ever documented, but Khloe does a pretty good job of accumulating luxury handbags in her own right, including a colorful array of Birkins.

The Many Bags of Katie Holmes

The-Many-Bags-of-Katie-Holmes

Before two weeks ago, I never had all that many thoughts about Katie Holmes. She’s beautiful, of course, and she seems extremely devoted to little Suri, who looks more and more like her Mini Me every day. A couple of months ago, I got caught in a Katie/Suri paparazzi scrum on my walk home from the grocery store, and it seemed to me at the time that living that kind of life must be very isolating, perhaps even dreadfully lonely. I didn’t fret about it for long, though; it’s hard to feel too much sympathy for the young, beautiful and incredibly wealthy.

And then, about two weeks ago, Katie Holmes staged a divorce-filing sneak attack full of the sort ballsy genius of which I had never previously assumed her capable. She came out with her metaphorical guns blazing against a husband that’s much more well-established and powerful than she is within their industry, and that’s no small thing. Not only that, but whatever dirt she had on noted crazyperson Tom Cruise must be insane if the prospect if it coming to light panicked his legal team so much that less than two weeks after filing, Katie has her requests met, her divorce papers signed, and her daughter safe in her care in New York. We doff our hats to the take-no-prisoners way she’s handled what could have been a mud-slinging mess while still getting her independence in a timely manner, and for that, we’d like to offer Ms. Holmes the greatest tribute we can provide in these parts: a look through her handbag collection, both past and present.

Let’s start with the present. In the time since her divorce was announced, Katie has been spotted everywhere carrying a simple woven leather tote bag with few, if any, distinguishing marks. The frayed edges and woven pattern indicate that it’s a Henry Beguelin Tote, but the pared-down look is something Katie’s come to embrace in the last year or so. You can shop Henry Beguelin via Neiman Marcus.
